ATutor Testing Tools Enhancements

Features described here will become a permanent part of the ATutor public distribution, added to the code repository, and made available as part of the next stable release.

The proposal is to implement two additional types of test questions: 1) matching and 2) ordering.

The changes or additions to the following sections are required to fully integrate the new question types:

  1. Questions database.
  2. Test preview.
  3. Test taking.
  4. Test results.
  5. Test marking.
  6. Test statistics.
  7. Test backup and restore.
  8. Handbook documentation.
  9. New language.
  10. Upgrade script.
  11. Installation script.

1. Matching Questions

Matching questions allow students to pair question items (on the left) in one column to alphabetised answer items (on the right) in another column.

  1. Instructors may include a different number of questions and answers. With the added restriction that matching questions may have no less than 1 and no more than 10 of either question and answer items, each.
  2. Question items match to zero or one answer item. Answer items may match to zero or more question items on the left. Question items cannot be associated with more than one answer item in order to make the question authoring, question marking, and question taking processes more intuitive to the user.
  3. Students will be granted partial credit for matching questions if they answer part of the question correctly. Questions used in a survey will not be marked.
  4. The alphabet letters used (a through j) to mark the answer items will be translated providing the options in various languages.
  5. Both question and answer items will allow for unrestricted HTML, which allows for the inclusion of images.
  6. The order in which question and answer items are displayed to the test taker will correspond to the order in which they were initially entered upon authoring.
  7. Matching questions will have an option affecting how they are presented to the test taker, they are:
    1. Simple: Question items will appear with a dropdown containing a list of alphabetised options. The options available correspond to the answer items that appear alphabetised in another column.
    2. Graphical: Question items will appear in a column on the left, while answer items will appear in a column on the right. To associate a question to an answer the test taker has to either click on the question, which highlights it, then click on an answer, or clicks and drags a question to an answer. Once the association is made a graphical line will be drawn between the two items. If a question item that is already associated with an answer item is reselected then the previous association will be erased allowing the test taker to re-associate with a different answer item.
  8. Feedback to the test taker will contain both the results and the corrected solutions presented in the display option specified. Questions using the graphical option will use different coloured lines to represent correct and incorrect choices as well as icons.
  9. Creating matching questions will provide the following fields, in order:
    1. Category: The category the question belongs to.
    2. Display Option: Select from Simple or Graphical, choice made by test creator.
    3. Optional Feedback: Feedback to display after the test has been taken.
    4. Instructions: Optional text that appears above the choices.
    5. Question 1 through 10: Numbered question items. At least one is require.
    6. Choices 1 through 10: For each Question 1 through 10 above corresponds to alphabetised answers below. Defaulting to an empty (i.e. not answered) option.
    7. Answer 1 through 10: Alphabetised items as options to the Questions. At least one is required.
  10. Answered questions will be marked automatically.
  11. A note will be added to the creation and edit question pages reminding instructors to randomize the order in which question and answer items are added.

2. Ordering Question (formerly Ranking tests)

Ordering questions require the test taker to correctly assign given items in a particular logical order or rank.

  1. Items will allow for unrestricted HTML, which allows for the inclusion of images.
  2. Ordering questions will provide the following fields, in order:
    1. Category: The category the question belongs to.
    2. Optional Feedback: Feedback to display after the test has been taken.
    3. Question: Required text that appears above the items.
    4. Ordered Items 1 through 10: At least two are required.
  1. The items will be randomized when presented to the test taker, but will always be created in order and will be presented in the correct order when reviewing the result.
  2. Answered questions will be marked automatically.
  3. The question will be presented to the test taker with a dropdown menu to the left of each item. The dropdown will contain numbered options used for ordering the items.
  4. Partial marks will be given for items in the correct order. The correctness of an item is determined by matching it to the order of the correct answer not by its relation to other items.
  5. The test question result will display the student result as well as the correct solution.
